BTEC Advanced Award in Chambers Administration

The BTEC Advanced Award in Chambers Administration is a unique qualification designed specifically for chambers clerks. The award is a professional qualification which certifies competence as a junior barrister's clerk. Developed by Central Law Training (CLT) in consultation with the Institute or Barristers’ Clerks (IBC) and validated as a BTEC qualification by Edexcel the levels of competence for the award have been set nationally.

The role of a barristers' clerk is extremely important and crucial to the smooth running of chambers. It is therefore essential that clerks are trained to a very high standard to ensure that they are able to work to the best of their ability and to reach their full potential.
The course is designed for junior clerks within the first 5 years of their career and is suitable for clerks from large or small chambers in all practice areas.
Junior clerks undertaking this award will:

  • Enhance their career profile.
  • Become more proficient at what they do.
  • Provide a better service to clients and members of chambers.
  • Secure a transferable qualification.
  • Enable progression to a higher level of qualification.

The course has been completely revised in Spring 2007 with the all of the materials being rewritten and updated. The emphasis of the training has been shifted towards distance learning, thereby reducing the time that those on the course have to spend away from chambers attending seminars. Experienced barristers clerks, with first hand knowledge of clerking and of life in chambers, worked on the re-development of the course and are now involved in the delivery and assessment of several modules
The course structure is:

  • Unit 1 – Barristers Clerks: their work in context
  • Unit 2 – The English Legal System and Legal Profession
  • Unit 3 – Personal and Communication Skills
  • Unit 4 – Practical Clerking
