Why become a member of the IBC?

  • Situations Vacant - available positions are sent out exclusively to the membership, ensuring them of the best chance of progressing in the profession.
  • Education  - first chance at often-discounted places for seminars.  Invitation to external organisations/government seminars relevant to these ever-changing times.  The chance to enhance your academic qualifications.
  • Support and Advice - available legal advice on employment matters through the IBC’s solicitor.  Access to confidential contacts in the event that you feel the need to discuss matters of professional standards.  Financial help through the Barristers' Clerks Benevolent Fund if you find yourself in difficulty through unemployment or other unfortunate circumstances.
  • News and Publications -   All relevant news shall be reported to members and, where urgent shall be distributed immediately -  and annually a summary is offered in the form of the annual report.
  • Events - Invitation to a variety of events including the annual conferences of the IBC and the Bar Council.  Garden Parties, Dinners and Sporting Events.  These will be diarised within the site and reminders of each will be distributed.
  • Information Technology - The Institute's newest offering.  It is intended that use of the web and email should speed up the sharing of information, instigate comment and feedback within the IBC, helping to enhance our strength.  It will make the membership aware of information previously offered to specific groups.

Careers & Employment Support

The IBC provides assistance to its membership who are in need of advice regarding any aspect of the job, their position in chambers and in respect of disputes that members may have with their employers.  Any of the officers can be approached for confidential advice regarding any problem that a member may have regarding their job.  The officers are also willing to support members at internal meetings in chambers which are of a disciplinary nature.

Legal Support

The IBC provides assistance to its membership who are in need of advice regarding any aspect of the job, their position in chambers and in respect of disputes that members may have with their employers. The officers are also willing to support members at internal meetings in chambers which are of a disciplinary nature.

The IBC is also able to provide funding for an initial advice from a solicitor regarding employment issues. This advice can be obtained either from the IBC's honorary solicitors or from a solicitor of the members choice. Approval must be obtained from two officers of the IBC before funding can be authorised and application should be made to the Chairman, Vice Chairman, Treasurer, Common Law or Chancery Secretaries.
