Facing court alone is a terrifying prospect. No one should have to, especially at Christmas.
Advocate (the new name of the Bar Pro Bono Unit) exists to match people in need of free legal help with volunteer barristers. People may be struggling to see their children, have been defrauded, or be facing an immigration or employment tribunal alone. In 2019, we aim to help 1,000 people by matching them with the right expert barrister. They need your help. Could you donate this Christmas to help people get access to justice?
For the first time ever, Advocate has teamed up with the Big Give in their Christmas challenge. From midday on Tuesday 27th November (Giving Tuesday) until midday on Tuesday 4th December, any donation made to Advocate on the challenge page will be DOUBLED: https://tinyurl.com/AdvocateBigGive2018
Advocate hear from 50 new people a week, all in need of free legal help. David, a victim of domestic violence who was living in emergency accommodation, was referred to Advocate to seek representation regarding the childcare arrangements of his four-year-old son, who had previously been taken into care. The charity matched David with a volunteer barrister who successfully represented him in court. The court decided that David would become the child’s primary carer, and that the child’s mother would be able to see him for defined periods, providing not only the child but also both parents, with more stability and certainty for the future. David said:
“Many, many thanks for all the help you gave me. I find it hard to stand up for myself. If you had not provided me with a barrister I don’t know what I would have done. The barrister was absolutely marvellous and I cannot thank her enough. She was very supportive and helped tremendously in court.”
Access to justice is a big gift. Will you help people like David to get equal access to justice?
